Alabama Fishing License Requirements

A valid Alabama freshwater fishing license is required for most anglers on Smith Lake. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Under 16 years old: No license required.
  • Alabama Residents ages 16–64: Required for boat fishing or using methods other than hook and line from the bank in your county of residence.
  • Alabama Residents age 65 and older: Exempt with proof of age and residency (carry valid ID).
  • Non-residents: License required regardless of age (daily, 7-day, or annual options available).

Bank fishing exemption note: Alabama residents may fish with ordinary hook and line from the bank in their county of residence without a license, but must carry proof of residency (e.g., driver’s license).

Always carry your license (physical printout or digital via the Outdoor Alabama app) and a photo ID while fishing. Game Wardens actively patrol the area.
